Neutral Point of View!
Description:  We’re seeing a lot of pastel and brighter colors this time of year. For this challenge we’re inviting you to step away from all that color and play with your neutral art supplies. You can add a few pops or hints of color, but be sure we see mainly neutrals on your vintage or shabby chic design. (Think black, white, gray, brown, beige, cream, ivory; even gold and silver.)

 

I started with a level 2 9×12 canvas from Micheal’s (could have used economy but I find that hey can be a bit wonky shape wise). I then applied gesso in both grey and white with back and forth brush motions.

 

I grabbed some of the new Tim Holtz Idea-ology collage paper Botanical. I knew the roses on this were going to look great as the background. Because the non-printed parts of this paper becomes translucent when applied, I painted titanium white on the backside of the roses,

I ripped the paper so the main images would be in a vertical strip, slightly off center and and other flower poking out the side of it. I find for me, that I often start with this kinda wonky ‘L’ shape to help me keep things contained in the main area.

I then start to add some stencil work, first applying a few shades of the grey gesso. Here I am using THS091, along with THS100. Be sure to mix white, grey and black so the stenciling doesn’t look flat.

While the canvas dries, I get started on prepping some of the embellishments I will be using.  I knew wood texture would look great in the neutral grays so I grabbed a piece of TH Woodgrain cardstock. First applied watered down grey gesso, to not only vary my tones but to get in all the wood grain grooves. I then worked in TH distress paint in black soot mainly where the knots were. Final step, brayer a thin coat of white, barely touching the woodgrain texture. I then used TH Thinlits die Nestled Ovals #661188.

In my stash I had this Maya road chipboard piece that I applied white gesso to and then stenciled black soot through THS006 (I believe this chipboard is over 5 years old but any flourish would do). I also applied black soot to a few words from 2Crafty.

 

For the flowers I base coated them with the grey gesso then dry brushed white gesso onto the tips and textures. The grey worked perfectly as a great shadow 😉

After layering everything together, here is the finished piece. I will share the different embellishments in the close ups …

Here I have added TH quote chip with a couple dabs of enamel accents. Love was die cut out of TH metallic cardstock.

 The mom letters are from TH grungeboard. The mom is layered on top of the woodgrain oval, gingham fabric washi tape and a white canvas tag by Fabric Elements (a steal from Tuesday Morning store). Best letters are felt alpha stickers by Creatology from my local dollar store.
