Bloomin’ Marvellous

Hello and welcome! Zoe here and I’m delighted to be hosting the Frilly and Funkie challenge. I’ve chosen “BLOOMIN’ MARVELLOUS” as the challenge theme. As spring pokes it’s head through the frozen ground, let’s celebrate the season and create a vintage or shabby chic project with flowers as the focus and in vintage muted pastel tones, (no brights).

Be sure to check out the Design Team inspirations here . Which brings me to how mine got started. Autumn’s project reminded me of one I started about a year ago but set aside (I do that often). Check out her project here @ SewPaperPaint I loved the idea of the flowers coming out of the envelope and kinda wish I hadn’t already started this project but her project inspired me to finish mine.

Like I said about a year ago I had found this vintage dustpan at a estate sale. I was going through a huge 3-D layer phase. Anything and everything was fair game to be glued and gessoed, lol. The thought for this project was how fun to make it look like the dustpan was cleaning up a bouquet of flowers. I was lucky enough to get my hands on two of the mystery boxes that Scrapbook Diaries (online store) use to offer early last year~ before I found The Funkie Junkie . But that also meant I had a huge supply of flowers in all colors and sizes, which I don’t find myself using very often, so this wasn’t a issue gluing random flowers onto the dustpan. I then applied gesso and got side tracked onto another project.

I knew this was a perfect project for the Distress Oxide re-inkers. In liquid form the ink was going to get into all those nooks and crannies while maintaining their color. Plus the oxidization element was going to help with fluctuation of hues. Although I used a few other Oxide colors I wanted the main three colors to be Fired Brick, Fossilized Amber and Broken China (not pictured). These were the perfect palette to go with the vintage yellow of the dustpan and not turn bright on top of the gesso.

After the colors were applied, I still felt it needed some leaves and filler elements. I went through my floral stash and applied gesso to some pieces, then used gel medium to glue them throughout. I chose to leave them white to help showcase all the scrumptious color.

For the banner I did the smoosh technique with Avery full sheet labels. The labels are not coated so the feathering that happened with the oxide inks was pretty cool. I then cut them into strips and folded them over a piece of bakers twine.

Then I remembered that there was a awesome flag in the Sizzix Sidekick ‘Americana’ set that I wish I had used with the labels I had inked up. Worked out well, tho, because the Idea-ology Typography letters were not standing out enough against just the inked labels so I used Kraft-Core deep brown cardstock, die cut the flag then embossed with the folder (which is from the Birthday set). I will tell ya, I LOVE the Sidekick!

I attached the banner with gel medium and there you have it, the finished piece. Isn’t it so true~ No Rain No Flowers 😉 Ready for some close ups?

I also added some Lindy’s Moon Shadow Mist in Golden Doublooms to add a little glitz and to help break up the boldness of the white gesso on the dustpan.
